Did you know that the greater majority of commercial health and fitness
clubs require a long-term contractual agreement that mandates a checking
account for them to debit each month? Well, what if you want to change gyms?
What if you are moving? Heck, what if you'd rather not give them access
to your social security number and checking account in the first place?
Here's some health and fitness news you can use! First, pay for your membership
in cash. Gyms crave cash. You'll save money in the long run, and can try
to broker a better deal since you're paying up front in cold hard cash.
Not only will this free you up from the health club's crazy gym contracts,
but your personal information is secured! Having a healthy and fitness-like
budget is great! Of most importance, you can pay the health & fitness
club in three-month installments, so if you ever want to cancel or go elsewhere
(or need a break from your fitness routine), it's no sweat!
Jerry Hogevoll of Salem, Oregon, is a fine example that we can improve our health and fitness levels at any age. Hogevoll, now 55, started bodybuilding at age 50 to get into shape, “mentally, spiritually and physically,” after a series of setbacks in his life. Now, five years later, he has recently won an Ironman competition, taking first place not only in the senior division, but also the open division, beating all groups in his weight category!
Before beginning his fitness and fat loss regimen, Hogevoll had a flabby 25 percent body fat. In 90 days he dropped to 9 percent by following a regimen of fat loss fitness and proper low carb diet, and he doesn't mean fad diets, either. In his opinion, diets like Dr. Atkins' famous Atkits Diet will eventually make your body cannibalize muscle, which results in lowered metabolism. Today his body fat is around 7 or 8 percent, dropping to 3 percent for competition training.
Hogevoll's idea of a total fitness program includes mind, body, and spirit. “If you don't have a healthy body,” he says, “the mind won't have a place to dwell.” He has written two books on fitness for 50+ folks, has a weekly television show in California, and speaks to school and civic organizations.
A self-proclaimed natural bodybuilder, Hogevoll says his fat loss and physical fitness was achieved without the use of any type of steroids or growth hormone. His hero and friend, Jack LaLanne, is a strong influence in his lifestyle. LaLanne, who pushed the benefits of weight training, diet, and self control for years, is now in his 80's and still advocates healthy living.
Although Hogevoll says bodybuilding used to be considered the “black sheep” sport, it's now an acceptable basis for fitness. Hogevoll's wife, also a bodybuilder, says people often ask her what her husband takes to achieve his level of fitness. According to her, “he takes his butt off the couch and works out.”
